Fising in NE Kansas has been a little slow this last week due to rain out west. Before that it was great, so it should be ready to catch on fire. I have a new site with lake reports for the area, and I plan on expanding the reports statewide this week. I also just put up a brand new forum a few days ago to replace my old one. Some of the best anglers in the state are posting tips there and it should provide a lot of great info in pretty short order. Check out my site when you get a chance at www.DavesCountry.com

With the rains and last few cool fronts the fishing on Wilson is rapidly improving. If the temperatures continues to stay below the norm I would anticipate the fish starting into a fall pattern very soon. I fished the Lucas park area yesterday downrigging yellow and white one oz. bucktails at 24 feet. The afternoon bite was slow but starting a 6 pm the stripers put on the feed bag, fishing by myself I was catching them 2 at a time nothing over 8 lbs. but lots of fun. I found several huge schools, if I would loose one school I would keep on moving and find another. Downrigging is certainly not my favorite fishing method but when the schools are moving fast it is an easier way to stay on them. The whites and stripers are beginning to surface pretty much lake wide early and late in the day. Good Luck

With the rains and cooler weather of the last few days the stripers, whites and catfish have fired up. Early mornings have been best with evenings producing too. The whites have been surfacing from lucas to the dam with school stripers feeding under and with them. Crankbaits, jigs and rattletraps thrown into the action will produce. I have been having better luck with bait in the evenings especially when the schools are not on top. The bigger stripers don't seem to be active with 7 lbs. being the largest we can catch. Good Luck.

I haven't posted a report the last few weeks as the fishing has been so unpredictable it's really hard to report. One day the stripers are surfacing early in the morning then the next day they are feeding in 50 feet of water. There just hasn't been any pattern to there feeding. We are still catching small stripers and a few large ones 15 to 20 lbs. at times in the Lucas park area to the dam but then there are days that they are at Minooka. This time of year certainly keeps you guessing. The Dog Days of Summer as it is called is certainly not my favorite time to fish or guide. So here's my report for what it's worth. The stripers are in the dam area feeding in 40 to 60 feet of water, live shad, perch, and carp seem to be the preferred bait. Early in the morning and late in the evening is best. Lots of catfish are being taken in Hell Creek using live or cut bait. That's about it for now. Good Luck and I don't know about you but I am ready for fall. Madd Jack

went out sat evening about 6 pm. was looking for white bass. figured they would be chaseing shad. did not see any so i started troling. start hooking saguars. none big but a bunch. found this 5 ft water off the edge of 25 ft water, and started hooking walleye. ended up with 5 for the night with the bigest one being 24 in and the smallest one 20in. ended up fishing under the lights and was catching white bass untill 2 am in morning until i got tired. next morning went trolling again and started hooking cat fish on wiggle warts. was a vary good weekend for fishing at perry. they need to keep the lake level at the way it is. also they should increase the walleye stocking at this lake. lets all call the fish and game dept and ask for this. also just too add too the fish i caught 2 bass in the 6 lb range also. WE NEED MORE BLACK BASS STOCKING IN THIS LAKE WAS A VARY GOOD WEEK END

The action on Wilson the last few days has been surfacing stripers! The fish haven't been large but the action has been excellent. Lots of fish to 5 lbs. 3 days ago I saw a school on top that was approx. one acre in size and they stayed up for 30 minutes. I wish I would have had my video camera with me. The white perch are also surfacing for those of you that want to catch allot of smaller fish. The perch are easier to catch and follow while surfacing than the stripers, and they make excellent eating. I have been having my best luck throwing 1/4 oz. bucktails with a red head and white or yellow tail. Good Luck and with the 4th of July weekend coming up be safe and look out for the other guy.

Well summer time is here with all the boat traffic and fun. We are still catching stripers over 10 lbs. fishing early and late in the day when the lake isn't as busy. The stripers are scattered from the dam to Minooka but fishing live shad 28 to 42 feet will produce fish when they are in the mood. I saw a huge school of white perch with a few stripers mixed in on top for at least 20 minutes a few evenings ago, didn't try to fish them as I was waiting for bigger fish, but I am sure a small bucktail thrown into the school would have produced a few fish. Good Luck

The striper fishing this last week has been very good at times. We are catching numbers of 4 to 9 lbs stripers with 18 caught in one afternoon. The larger fish are also hitting with 8 caught this week between 10 and 14 lbs. We have been fishing live shad off the river chanel in 28 to 32 feet of water in the Minooka park area. Good Luck

The striper fishing to say the least has been tough this last week. Constant wind shifts and storm fronts make it difficult to stay on the fish. We have however been still catching a few 4 to 7 lbs. stripers with an 18 lber. as the largest so far this week. I have been fishing the Lucas park and Minooka area with live shad, fished between 5 and 30 feet. Good Luck

Striper fishing the last week or so has been real unpredictable. At times the stripers are hitting like there is no tomorrow then the next day it is hard to even get a bite. When they are on the bite 4 to 7 lbs. has been the average, fishing the Minooka and Lucas Park area with live shad fished between 1and 30 feet. The stripers are in a prespawn pattern and moving all the time. I have been getting reports of nice walleye being taken in the minooka area with a jig and worm combo fishing the flats and humps. If this weather would ever stablize the fishing should be excellent. Good Luck

Fishing this week has been a little up and down with the winds being the big factor. But despite it we managed to catch quite a few 4 to 5 # stripers, a few walleye and smallmouth. The weather today was cold and rainy and it took awhile to get on the fish but when I did I caught 10 stripers up to 15 lbs. I have been fishing the upper end of Wilson from Minooka west on the shallow water breaks with live shad. I am still getting reports of the whites being in the river at least until this cold front hit. Sure hope the weather settles down this week, Good Luck

The stripers are still on the bite in the west end of Wilson producing fish up to 11 lbs. and lots of 4 to 5 lb. stripers. The last 4 days I have caught them using a variety of methods with live shad as bait. The wind kept us from getting on the fish today but with the warmer weather I would expect the fish to start moving back up the lake. I have heard reports of white bass being caught in the smokey and the saline. A recent report from Webster was the the crappie, cats and wipers are also on the prowl. Good Luck

Well the weather this weekend has kept most of us off the water but Friday afternoons fishing was pretty good. Fishing the river end of Wilson with live shad we managed to put 6 in the boat and missed at least that many more. I have been fishing in 20 to 3 feet of water. The fish have been scattered and you just have to look until you find them. Good Luck

We fished the river end this weekend and had allot more hits than we had fish in the boat but it still was a good weekend and the weather was great. Live shad fished in 10 to 14 feet of water seemed to work best working the shad real tight on the structure. I found allot of stripers in deeper water but never could get them to go. With this warmer weather my thoughts are that they are suspending in deep water and going in shallow to feed. I found water temp. as high as 54 degrees on Sunday. Good Luck

Fishing has been a little hit and miss but stripers are being taken in Hell creek and the river end. Yesterday I counted 18 fishermen wade fishing in Hell creek but only saw one fish on a stringer. I have been fishing the river mostly as there seem to be more fish in that area and allot less traffic. But from the reports I have gotten the larger stripers are coming from Hell creek. The water temp. has fallen again with the main lake at 38 and the coves 42. We need a few warm days and nights to warm it up and really get the action going. I did see several bank fishermen catching catfish on the upper end. Good Luck.

With the weather this week fishing reports are few and far between but I do have a couple late reports from the week before. A friend from Nebraska came down to Wilson Feb 20-23 and caught 70 total stripers with 2 of those weighing over 16#s These were all caught in the Hell creek area. By the way this was his first time to fish Wilson, he told me he will be back! Feb 23 Hell Creek was so full of boats that another fishermen decided to try his luck at the dam and caught several 3 to 4# walleye casting slabs, no monsters but certainly good eating size. If these female walleye are starting to move towards the dam it should be a good time to catch a HOG! I would like to apologize to anyone who came to Zeiners Bass Shop on Sat. March 2 expecting to talk to me. Due to the road conditions I had to cancel but am trying to clear my calendar for another Sat. in the future. On a sad note Bruce Coate another local guide here on Wilson who has been battling cancer for the last 6 months was returned to the Hutchinson hospital yesterday! All your prayers will certainly be appreciated. I competed against Bruce in tournaments and in guiding and he is certainly a fisherman to be respected!!

The morning in the Hell creek area started out great with lots of stripers being caught by the wader fisherman and a few by boats, I didn't see it but heard of a 23# striper being caught. As the day progressed the fishing certainly slowed down with only a few being caught in the afternoon. I did get a report of a few stripers being caught in the river end, so as the water warms the shad are moving into the shallow warmer water and the stripers are following. These fish are being caught fishing live bait and throwing bucktails in 4 to 11 feet of water, Good Luck

Well the wind blew hard today and kept most of the boats off the water but the wader fishermen in the Hell Creek Area caught and released at least 70 stripers according to my estimation. Most of the stripers were between 4 and 7 lbs but I saw at least 6 stripers between 8 and 12 lbs. and 4 stripers between 14 and 20 lbs. These were catch on the wind blown points throwing bucktails into the wind. It was a great day to be bank fishing. Good Luck!

As the wind and cold howls outside my door my thoughts are in a different place, a warm place with a light breeze, waves gently rocking my boat and the fish hitting like there is no tomorrow. Such are the dreams of a fisherman during these times of cold, ice and snow. With the warm January we had I like everyone else was getting spring fever only to have it all blown away by old man winter's latest blast. However every day that passes brings us just that much closer to spring and to that day with a gentle WARM breeze. Lake Wilson has been producing a few nice stripers and walleye for the those who have been able to get on the water in between the fronts and wind. The grapevine has been a little hard to get exact information from but the Hell Creek area has been producing along with the Duvall cove area. Slabbing seems to be the preferred method with white and chartreuse as the most popular colors. I haven't been on-line much the last few months due to computer problems but intend to post reports at least once a week during the up coming year. For those of you that visit Wichita I will be a guest at Zeiners Bass Shop 737 S. Washington on Saturday March 2, 2002. Stop on by and say Hi. I love to talk fishing and meet new people. I'm sure Jim Zeiner will have a good selection of tackle on hand for the upcoming spring season and have a fishing story or two of his own. Kansas Striper Association has joined the internet http://www.kansasstriperassociation.com/ KSA is a group of local fishermen who get together for tournaments, fish frys and always a good time. They are a non-profit organization that was start by myself and a bunch of other striper guys and gals about 15 years ago. This is a family orientated club where men, women and children complete equally. Check out the site and for more info.contact Eddie rattrap@kansasstriperassociation.com On one final note due to my computer crashing I lost all my email addresses and lost all my friends who were on my email fishing reports list. With increasing water temperature and the water sports people out in force Lake Wilson is still producing a few stripers up to 7 lbs. Most are being caught fishing 32 to 36 feet deep over various depth's of water. I can't seem to figure any pattern or place to catch them on a day to day bases so I just have to go look and try my luck. I did catch a school of small stripers, 4 lbs., surfacing at 7 AM along the face of the dam. Good Luck

We have been catching stripers surfacing the last few days from the dam to minooka. At times there are lots of schools up but they have been spooky and hard to approach. I have been having my best luck with 1 oz. jigs but have heard of stripers being caught on top with just about any lure you preffer! The action is best in the early morning with evenings being allot slower. Good Luck

The fishing at Wilson for the last ten days has been disappointing at best. With the lake levels rising the fish slowly shut down, once they started to release water it did improve for awhile and then went to slow as soon as the mud line was pulled to the main lake. The gates were slowed to 400 CFS this morning and the lake is near conservation level again. I just came back from fishing below the dam and caught 8 stripers up to 6 lbs, fishing minnows in the fast water. There were allot of stripers released so nows a good time to catch a few below the dam. Fishing conditions should improve rapidly now if the wind would slow to below 20 mph. Good Luck.

Fished wilson the evening of the 13th and caught 9 stripers up to 9 lbs, the largest was caught by the youngest in the boat, an 11 year old young lady visiting here from Hawaii. June 14 fished again this evening and caught 7 stripers up to 9 lbs. Fishing the Lucas park area with live shad in 44 feet of water. I saw my first school on stripers on top today they were small fish maybe 3 lbs. but at least maybe this is the beginning of the surfacing action. With the rains lately the lake level is up but is being lowered, water temp. is 71 degrees. Good Luck,

Fished Wilson hard today only to end up with 5 stripers up to 12 lbs. missed at least 10 more but still had a good time! With the water levels on the rise it has certainly changed the fishing but it should improve soon. We were fishing the lucas park area with live shad at about 38 feet. Good Luck!

June 2 the fishing was great catching 11 stripers up to 11 lbs and we had two BIG FISH on and lost them both. Fishing the lucas area with live shad in 44 feet of water. June 3 with an incoming cool front and high winds the fish shut down and we only ended up with 2 stripers up to 5 lbs. that's the Kansas weather for you. Good Luck!

Fished wilson friday evening and the stripers were hitting a little funny. We caught only 5 up to 6 lbs. in the Lucas park area on shad. Saturday morning they were still hitting funny but we ended up with 7 stripers up to 10 lbs. The last few days on northerly winds have slowed the fishing down a little but I am still getting reports of lots of nice walleye being caught. Most are drifting jig and worm combos but most of the larger walleye are being caught on leeches or minnows. Good Luck

The fishing on Wilson has been great the last week on Wilson with several stripers in the 8 to 10 pound range being caught and a 21 lber. being caught on the 20th. Most of the fish are being caught between Minooka and Lucas on live bait. Walleye fishing has also been excellent with a 9 1/2 lbers caught this week and lots of smaller fish. Right now is a great time to have a chance at a BIG striper or walleye. Good Luck

Well with the wind and the weather we were back to bank fishing! May 4 we caught 5 stripers up to 6 lbs. fishing live shad on the bottom. May 5 with an approaching storm the fish were hitting good and as the wind increased to 30 plus the waves were hammering the bank, it kind of reminded me of surf fishing! We caught 8 stripers up to 7 lbs.

The wife and I fished off the bank this evening between 5:30 and 7:30 at Lucas park. We caught 6 stripers up to 6 lbs. one catfish and one undersized smallmouth, fishing live shad right on the bottom. We missed at least 6 or 7 good runs. The winds of the last few days have made it tough to get on the fish and then to have it shift and come out of the north made it even tougher today.

Fished this morning caught 4 stripers up to 5 lbs. and one barely legal walleye in the Otoe park area of Wilson. Hell creek area has gotten allot of pressure this last week from bank fisherman and boats but I haven't heard many reports of fish being caught. The bank fisherman are starting to show up in the Minooka area, the last few years there were some nice stripers caught fishing there. The main lake water temp. is 53 degree as soon as the temp climbs a couple of more degrees things should really bust loose.

We fished Lake Wilson Apr 7 all day only to catch 3 stripers up to 4 lbs. We had one other bite that we missed. Two of these were caught in the Lucas park area and one in Hell creek balloning shad. The front that had moved thru the day before had certainly shut the fishing down. I did hear of a 16 lber caught the evening of the 6th and saw 2 stripers caught by wade fisherman in Hell creek one of the stripers I would guess at about 7 lbs.

Fished the Wilson Hell creek area friday evening and caught 7 stripers up to 5 lbs. Missed at least that many more balloning shad in this area. Saturday afternoon and evening fished the same area only to catch one small bass. We had several good runs but just couldn't put a hook in them! The Walleye fisherman are starting to show up on the dam at Wilson, I haven't heard any good reports but there were several there after dark on Friday night. Good Luck!

Here in Kansas the ice has just gone off the lakes in the last few weeks and the stripers are on the prowl. I can find lots of nice fish in deep water but can not make them bite! This is shallow feeding time for stripers and as a result the wader fishermen are catching the majority of the stripers that are being caught along with some nice walleye and whites. Since I don't wader fish as much as I used to one way I catch these shallow feeding stripers is free lining shad. Free lining simply means using a hook with no weight and casting your shad away from the boat then pulling him around the area you want to fish with your trolling motor. Sounds simple right? Well try doing it with 3 or 4 shad, shad being a school fish will eventually find each other and then you get the fun of untangling there mess! One thing I do is tie a balloon above the shad at the depth I think the fish are feeding, release the balloon and feed out line until it is behind my boat the distance I want. I will then do this with however many balloons I feel I can handle according to the conditions for the day. I leave my reels in free spool with the clicker on to let me know when the strike occurs, I quickly take the rod out of the holder, point the rod at the balloon, engage the reel, let the fish take out the slack and set the hook hard! When you have allot of line out you have to set the hook real hard to compensate for line stretch. Give it a try there are times when this is the only way to get'um to bite, Good Luck

Lake Wilson is producing a few stripers for wade fisherman throwing jigs in Hell creek and the points near the dam. I have been on the water 2 times this week and had very little success. In my opinion the stripers are feeding shallow and hard to approach by boat. I have located stripers in the Lucas park area and the Duvall cove area but the bites have been hard to come by. This incoming cold front should push them out to feeding deeper and I'm looking forward to putting a few in the boat this week. Good Luck!

Got on the water Mar. 17 at Kanopolis looking for shad, ended up throwing the net for hours with only a few shad to show for it. Lots of dead shad on the banks everywhere. I did see several nice walleye being caught in the dam area and found allot of fish on sonar hanging on the breaks at 18 to 22 feet. Here's a report from Wilson from one of my email buddies " Thanks CC" I saw a 8-1/2 lb and a 5 lb Walleye plus some smaller ones , Some of which were taken from the Bank. I saw a 26 in striper and heard of more taken along with 42 nice White Bass in the 14-16 inch range. Some Crappie taken 8 to 13 inches.Water temp was about 42 deg near the dam. There were quite a few boats out Sat.

With the last few days of nice weather my phone has been ringing with people wanting to know if the fish are bitting? Well to be honest I went to Wilson last Saturday with the intention of fishing for walleye but as soon as I arrived so did a cold front with lots of rain, wind, and cold. I have been getting a few reports thru the grapevine of walleye being caught at cheney by wader fishermen in the dam area. Kanopolis is producing a few white bass and walleye in the Loaders point and dam area. The wader fishermen at Wilson have caught a few nice walleye and whites fishing the points near the dam and in the Lucas park area. My boats been in the shop the last few weeks and it should be done today. I plan on being on the water allot next week and should have a more complete report then. Good Luck!!
