It's that time of the year again when
vast numbers of blue marlin start gathering on and around
Venezuela's famed La Guaira Bank, and that usually signals that
the prestigious all release INTERNATIONAL LA GUAIRA
BILLFISH SHOOTOUT is getting near. This is where 118
anglers fished on forty boats for 3 days in March of 1999 and
released a world record 256 blue marlin.
A field of over one hundred
anglers from six countries, the majority from about 12 different
U.S. states, is registered to compete for cash, prizes, prestige
and fame when the SHOOTOUT celebrates its eighth annual
edition from March 12th through 17th, out of the Best Western
Puerto Viejo Airport Inn & Marina on La Guaira's Coast.
Among the incentives, is a $25,000
cash award to the first individual angler able to release a
Super Grand Slam consisting of a blue marlin, a white marlin, a
sailfish and a spearfish in one of the three days of competition.
All anglers must fish with the "official tournament
line", SUFIX, to ensure equality for all teams.
And if you think it can't be done, think again, because last year
all four species of billfish were caught during the event,
although not by one single angler in one day!
Observer Coordinator, Michelle Zelones,
reports that a highly qualified group of Official Observers has
signed up for the event, several are graduates of the Certified
Observer Program, and each observer has been sponsored
by at least one captain member of the tournament's very demanding
Honorary Board of Captains.
If you haven't signed up yet, you
better do so. There are still a couple of charter boats
available to help you get in on the action. For
registration, visit
www.southfishing.com , or call Shootout Headquarters at 800
882HOOK (4665) or 305 279-3252. We'll see you in Venezuela!
